We wanted to get to know Mrs. Newey, one of our veteran teachers at White City schools.
Mrs. Newey decided to start teaching eleven years ago, when she was still a para. She decided to become a teacher in order to help kids learn. She started as a para at Council Grove. Mrs. Newey says that she would like to continue teaching in White City.
Teaching requires considerable education. It took Mrs. Newey many college classes to become a teacher. Mrs. Newey says that becoming a teacher is expensive. She feels that teachers deserve to be paid more.
At White City School, Mrs. Newey teaches math and ELA to 6th and 7th graders, but her favorite subject to teach is Science. Her favorite school lunch is chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes, and her favorite school sport is football.
Mrs. Newey keeps her family close. Her son also attends White City School. Mrs. Newey thinks that it is great that her son goes to the same school where she teaches. She says, “I get to see him sometimes and we ride to and from school together.” Mrs. Newey enjoys that she gets to see her son during the school day.
Outside of school, Mrs. Newey enjoys farm work and mowing. She also enjoys art. Mrs. Newey believes that summer is important. She agrees with the new cell phone policy because she feels kids should have more social time that isn’t texting across a table. She also feels that it will improve kids’ ability to pay attention for longer.
