What’s Law Day? Let’s find out!
We went to our school counselor Ms. Lorri Kasten to find out about this recent school activity.
First, we asked Lorri Kasten about Law Day. She tells us that it is an opportunity for students in high school to explore future careers. She says, “Law Day is an opportunity to learn why the courtroom is set up the way it is, what role prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, court reporters and clerks and Court Services Officers play in the legal process. Students watch whatever cases that appear on that day's docket except for CINC (Child in Need of Care) ones as those are closed to the public.”
Second, we wanted to know who could attend Law Day. Ms. Kasten says, “Any student in grades 9-12 that are interested in pursuing a career as an attorney, judge, county prosecutor, court reporter or court services officer, etc. can attend Law Day”. Students go one time a year for a couple hours out of the day in Council Grove Kansas.
Third, we also wanted to know where this event took place. She tells us “For students that attend White City High School or Council Grove High School, Law Day takes place at the Morris County Courthouse in the Spring”. The courthouse in Council Grove Kansas opens up for these students, so they can come learn about their future career (if they plan to go into the field of law).
Lastly, she wanted to let us know some facts about the courtroom and what you cannot do in the courtroom. She says, “You may not bring a phone into the courtroom without permission from the judge. If you fail to follow or forget this rule and your cell phone makes any noise, it will be taken from you and donated to a shelter”.
Thank you for Ms Kasten for the story.
Maybe White City is home of a future lawyer!
