Recently on the 10th of November, our High School Scholars Bowl team had a meet at Goessel. Scholars Bowl is like a game show where you go head to head against other schools answering questions from a broad range of subjects like Language Arts, Social Science, Mathematics, Science, Current Events, and sometimes Pop Culture and Sports. To answer a question you must buzz the buzzer that is provided.  Scholars Bowl is a clever way to get students excited for learning.

I interviewed one of the Scholars Bowl players. We asked Jameson Lautt how he likes Scholars Bowl, and he said, “It's my first year in Scholars Bowl and it is a lot more competitive than Quiz Bowl.”

We asked about the main differences between Quiz Bowl and Scholars Bowl and Jameson stated, “The questions are harder and we have a much smaller team coming from White City.”

Per the rules, each Scholars Bowl team will have a maximum of five players on the team at one time. In our case, all the girls are from Hope, with two boys from Hope and three boys from White City.

We also interviewed  one of the coaches, Darlene Griffiths.  We asked her how she likes coaching Scholars Bowl and she stated, “I enjoy coaching Scholars Bowl.  It gives me an opportunity to interact with the students outside of the school setting.”

We also asked Mrs. Griffiths what is her favorite part of coaching Scholars Bowl, and she said, “My favorite part of coaching Scholars Bowl would be when a student who has not buzzed in and answered a question finally gets brave enough to buzz in and gets the question right!  My heart leaps for joy!  It is one of my proudest moments.”

We asked her what her experience in Scholars Bowl was and she said, “I was very shy when I was in high school, so I did not join the Scholars Bowl team.  I have coached several teams including the Junior High and High School teams at Herington for many, many years as well as the high school team at Concordia for a year.”

The Rural Vista team did very well winning five out of eight matches. Mrs Griffiths expresses that she is very proud of how they did.

Here’s to a great Scholars Bowl season!
