White City High School has accepted a new teacher. His name is Kevin Hiskett or Mr. Hiskett. His role is as Industrial Arts teacher. Since he is new, we decided to have a nice chat with him.

We asked, “How is your school year going so far?” He answered, “It's been a change teaching at two schools, but I am glad that I have the opportunity to reach more students.” While we were talking we got on the subject of “What is your educational background?” He responded with, “Southeast Community College, Ne, Doane University, Ne.”

We asked him another question, “Where are you from?” He answered,"Small town Nebraska.” Then we queried him, “Why do you want to teach at White City?” He told us, “A chance to reach more students and teach them the life skills I believe they need to know for life.”

We continued to talk, and we inquired, ” What interested you in teaching?” He told usI enjoy being able to teach students things that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives. I love seeing the look in my students’ eyes when what they have been learning finally “clicks” and makes sense, or when they stop and look at their project and what they accomplished with their own hands.”

We continued chatting and got on the subject of his experience in education.  He said that, “I have worked as a substitute teacher for nearly 10 years and spent almost 2 years as a para-educator before going to college to obtain my teaching degree.” Since we were on the subject of education we asked, ”Do you have anyone in your family who works in education?” his answer to that was “Not anymore. My wife did after graduating college.”

On the subject of education, we wanted to know, "What did you think of your own school time?” He said that “I was not an “academic” student when I was younger, and never imagined being a teacher. Sometimes we never know what’s in our future.”

As we were coming to the end of our chat we asked “Do you do anything for school besides teaching?”  He said “Yes, I was the FFA advisor for Hope until this year, now I just maintain 3 shops and help with maintenance issues in Hope.”

Our last question was: “What do you like to do in your free time?” He said, “I like to fly RC airplanes or ride my Harley.”

Thank you to our new Industrial Arts teacher for his cooperation with his article!
